Diary
This was one of the best organised tournaments i have played in . The sponsors Paddy
Power had not only guaranteed €1,000,000 in prize money but added €50,000 as
well . It was held at Jurys Ballsbridge and had 35 tables for a capacity of 350 , in
the end there were 336 .
All the tables were new , the cards and chips were top quality and the room was
surrounded in plasma screens with all the neccesary information , they had also
thought to have large printed boards with the layout of the room to make it easy to
find your table . The staff led Barry Mundee and Dave O'Neil did a great job and
tournament director as always was Liam Flood .
My table had a couple of players i knew , Steve Jellinek and Rob Yong as well as an
invited American who was to guest host during filming of the live final , none other
than Mike Caro , co author of the original Super System and also author of the only
poker book i have actually read throughout Poker Tells .
Early on Mike played a range of hands from all positions and varying raises to
reinforce his image of the mad professor , however he finally trapped himself making
an all in bluff against a flopped full house , during this time i slow played KK
after he limped and flopped quads but he must have spotted a tell and passed to my
small bet on the turn lol .
The only other hands of note were winning an unraised pot after 4 limpers with AA in
the BB , then when in the SB i had 55 on a flop of 6 6 5 and led out but no callers
. I felt really good and was stealing several pots when i played this hand , i will
describe it as it happened and then tell you what i should have done .
We were at the 200 400 level and i had 11,000 , we started with 10,000 , Rob Yong
the chip leader in seat 9 was sat 3 to my left and was absent from the table when
Steve Jellinek in seat 8 made it 1200 to go , passed to me in the BB i found KJs ,
Steve is a good player but i knew he was solid and could be outplayed out of
position , i breifly considered raising but decided to flat call , the flop was
perfect for my hand , 4 7 T with two clubs my suit , i checked and Steve bet 2800 ,
usually i would reraise here with two overs and the flush draw but i decided to call
and move in on the turn unless an A fell , i thought Steve would check a missed A so
either had flopped a pair or maybe had 88 or 99 , worse case a flopped set , turn
was the 9 of clubs making my flush and i moved in for my last 7000 , Steve almost
instantly called and i knew i needed the Q of clubs for a straight flush , i was
right he had A8 of clubs and i was out.
I like the way Steve played this hand but my play allowed him to win it , above i
said i breifly thought of raising , there was a reason , as the chip leader was away
from the table on his left it occurred to me that his hand didn't have to be that
strong to raise the blinds , he had only raised twice before and never tried to
raise through Rob , the correct play for me sensing this weakness in his raise and
the possible reason for it was to reraise and win the pot unchallenged , instead i
made a call with a weaker hand preflop out of position and we both hit a flop that i
was now destined to lose my chips in , admittedly an all in check raise may not have
been called by Steve on the flop but i second guessed myself into thinking he may
have flopped a set and didn't want to see the board pair.
I was frustrated at going out on this hand when i felt i was playing well but that's
no limit for you , all it takes is one mistake.
How would you have played this hand ?
All the best
