Diary
However although there isn't much to talk about , whereas in my Paris diary i described putting players on a hand through betting today i was relying on tells to help me , unfortunately although spotting them is fairly easy , evaluating them on previous actions is not an exact science and eventually proved my downfall on the key hand .
My table and position was good , the two players i knew were to my left in seats one and two , Lee Nelson and Noah Boaken , i was in seat 5 and assumed the three to my left were online qualifiers .
We started with 10,000 chips and blinds of 25 50 , on the first hand i was the BB and the FP raised to 250 , all passed to me and i called with AQs , flop was Q J 5 , i bet 500 and the FP raised to 1500 , i called , turn was another 5 , i checked and he now bet 3000 ! To call would mean half my chips in the pot on the very first hand and with such low blinds that would be ridiculous . I went through the betting and had to assume he had flopped a set of Jacks or had KK , i studied him and could see his pulse in his neck was almost bursting , based on one unseen hand i had no idea if he had a monster or was bluffing , sometimes you have to lay down the best hand but i wanted to try to see his hand so i passed the AQ face up and said " you must have Kings " , he showed his AKo !
I have seen this kind of play with AK many times in Vegas particularly in one table satellites where the raiser hates to pass but here playing a £5000 event i was surprised at his bet on the turn .
I remained focused and after 2 levels still had around 8500 , Lee had built up to 18,000 and was dominating the table and Noah on his left had recovered from 6000 back up to 12000 , during the next 2 levels i blinded away until i found JQs in mid position and called for 400 , the AK player also called as did Lee , Noah and the BB checked , the flop came K J 4 with two spades , BB checked and i bet 800 , AK player flat called , i put him on a straight or flush draw as i assumed if he had a K he would have raised to get the other three out of the pot with any potential draws , all passed , turn was an 8 , i checked and now he went all in for 3200 , i had 4900 left and a tough decision.
First i looked at the player , yet again his pulse was thumping , was he bluffing or was it just nerves at playing such a big event and being all in ? Then i tried to put him on an exact hand , if he had AK or KQ preflop i am sure he would have raised , if he flopped top two i am sure he would have raised my initial bet so could he have a weaker K such as KT or K9s , if so because of the draws he should have raised to find out where he stood with my bet . The other possibilities were TQs or 9Ts for straight and flush draws or maybe a suited small A in which case i was currently winning with my pair of Jacks .
In the end i favoured 9Ts and thought the 8 had given him extra outs which is why when i showed weakness checking he moved in on a semi bluff , his pulse continued and eventually i was sure he didn't have a K and called . I was wrong this time , he had KTo .
This left me with 1700 and 5 minutes before the blinds went to 300 600 , in FP i picked up K9s and decided to commit all in , the action was passed to Lee who said " i'll call " almost inferring leave him to me , Noah who had 13,000 decided to take a chance knowing he was behind and also called for two reasons , he was sure the blinds would pass and he knew Lee would check it down if he missed the flop and they both would be happy to see me out .
The flop was Q 9 5 all spades , both checked , turn a 4 , now Noah bet small and Lee passed , i said " you have a Queen ? " and he nodded , his hand was QTo with the T of spades , the river made his flush and i was out .
The longer you play this game the more tough situations you will face and sometimes your reads will be perfect and sometimes as i found today it will be wrong , however the fact that you have the ability to consider the hand through and make that decision will mean you're game is improving , never be afraid to be wrong and always analyse what you did and how next time you will do it better .
